Nambe River Ranch is a small ranch located in Nambe, New Mexico. We raise and 4-H show New Mexico Dahl Sheep (United Horned Hair Sheep Association registered), Boer Goats (American Boer Goat Association registered), many breeds of chickens, and horses.

‍ ‍The Nambe River Ranch was established in 2012 with our 3 daughters raising and showing Nigerian Dwarf Goats in Rio Arriba County and then later Santa Fe County.

After multiple year of raising different breeds of goats and sheep to show with 4-H, we found a breed that fits our busy schedule between 3 daughters and all their extracurricular activities with sports and clubs. The New Mexico Dahl Sheep has become our flock/herd of choice. Their temperament is skittish, however, when they learn to trust you, they follow like a heeler. They are not like goats that they are always getting into trouble (rams can sometimes be that way if they aren’t with the ewes and nothing will stop those horns). They are not asking to die like many other sheep breeds. They choose what’s good and bad for them in grazing pastures. Ewes tend to be dog aggressive (head butting dogs) so if you want for herding, you need a flock of rams only (rams will herd and obey dogs but ewes will hit them). These sheep have many wild survival instincts and don’t require constant attention. They are a haired sheep; therefore, they don’t require shearing. Their meat is similar to bighorn meat (they don’t have lanolin with wool so don’t have that meat taste). When you put them in pasture, they will eat weeds and trees leaves they can reach before ever touching alfalfa or grass. The Nambe River Ranch currently has 9 UHHSA Registered Ewes (all horned) and 1 UHHSA Registered Ram New Mexico Dahl Sheep. We only keep that largest and longest stock that have the least no health issues. Lambing should occur between September through April.
